I think this because when I try to re-download a replacement copy to load unto my new HDD and enter the product key that I had been given originally, MS seems to treat it as a trial product key. Each time I open Word, for example, I get a screen informing me it is a trial and asks to activate it.
When I try to activate it by indicating I have a paid version of the software I again insert the key accordingly but the response comes back to say it is not eligible as a paid product key presumably. As I said, I have re-downloaded before with this same key about 1.

My suggestion is you buy the "Retail Disk" edition rather than an online download. Or order the "Backup" disk along with the online download. If you are getting an online download, check very carefully that you are getting a "FPP" license to allow the 3 concurrent installs rather than a "PKC" license which allows only 1 installation.
No matter how you buy Office, online or retail disk, there is always a product key. For the download. Make sure you keep a copy of it written down so you have it for future installs. The same, single product key will be used for all three installs. Office comes in both 32 and 64 bit versions. Office 32bit works on both 32 and 64 bit machines. MS still recommends 32bit for most people. Don't assume that your new machine will be 32bit hardware. Acutally, most new machines are 64bit, even if they are running 32bit windows and apps.
My 4 year old laptop is 64 bit running 32bit Windows. And I bet if you look closely you will find that your laptop is actually 64bit hardware too. What context are you seeing "beta" in. Make multiple copies of the Product Key. Uninstall the starter version or any trial that's preinstalled on the PC when it comes time to install the purchased version.
There is a bit and a bit version of Office Home and Student Microsoft advises using the bit version even on a bit WIndows installation.
